It was with a heavy heart last night that, after much thought and conscience wrestling, that I felt the need to end my role on Newcastle's Gay Scene. This decision did not come easily, nor was it made as a result of a 'temper tantrum' or 'queeny strop'.
I won't go into any bi*chfest contest as to the why's and wherefors because, contrary to most peoples beliefs, that is not in my nature. Also, I would imagine, most of you don't care... those of you that DO care will have a fair idea as to the reasons why.
I won't pretend to anyone, I will miss working there, after all it has been part of my life for the past 10 years - 26th Sept 1996 first day behind bar in Waterloo St Powerhouse. However I won't miss the constant late nights, the back-stabbing and one-up-man-ship contests & the drunk customers refusing to leave who "are not pished, just tired".
Try to continue to enjoy the scene. We all know it's cr*p at the minute, but there are one or two genuine people on the scene who want to make it better - and they don't have profit at the top of their agenda. Support them in what they do, they work hard to try and provide you with a scene to be proud of, they need your support to know they're doing it right and your suggestions on how to make it better for YOU. If you don't like somewhere, then vote with your feet - going into a bar night after night drinking and complaining about it is still putting money in the till.
Monologue over - See you around!!!!

hey!! words cant describe my disappointment, the disappointment in the lack of support and encouragement that you should have been given and the sheer disappointment that individuals within the company pushed you into making this decision. good managers/staff like yourself rick are few and far between. good luck for the future.
take care rick.

I would also like to echo FBH's sentiments and add a few words of my own.
I have been employed in a FBL outlet for just over two years and have worked for 3 Mangers in that time and have to say Rick the staff and the customers will miss you.
You have been a pleasure to work for and with. Trying to satisfy both customers needs and desires and tow the Company line.
You have helped your outlet grow and develop and tried to make it a safe and happy environment for both staff and customers alike. I hope that some else will carry on the good work you have done.
No one is indispensable but personalities and drives are very rarely duplicated or appreciated.
Good luck in your future ambitions and your outlet will be very strange without you here at it's helm.

I know i'm no longer part of the scene but I know what a great miss you will be to it. I know how much you have given to the scene and dispite what you may think there are people out there who appreciate it. The eagle was dieing a death untill you turned it round. However I am so glad you are thinking about yourself at last. i am sure it won't be long before you realise this was the best decission you ever made.

I've just heard the disappointing new's, but I thought it wouldn't be long,so sorry to hear that Rick will not be part of The Eagle anymore, his character and charm!! has made this bar over the last year and it would not have been the same if he were not have been there. Let's hope the Staff,(if there's any) keep the bar going till someone brave enough tackle's this post and last as long...! Good manager's like Rick are very hard to find,so lets hope the next lucky people to get hold of him appreciate the many, many talent's this guy holds to being a manager.www.opheliab.com

So sorry to hear of your departure Rick. We customers know how much time and effect you have put in to make the eagle the success it has become. In my opinion it is (was?) the best bar on the scene which is mainly down to the friendly welcome from you and your staff. FBL have lost a valuable asset and I wish you success in your future employment.
Well news filtered through of your departure before I left for my Saturday night out. As I had already said to people I would be in the eagle, I ventured there. Atmosphere was certainly different.
Changes will occur, quite rightly a new manager will have their own ideas on how the place should be run, but lets hope they build on your success rather than demolish it to the foundations.
Sadly, I think women in the eagle on a men only night is the shape of things to come. I am not against change. With 30 years socialising in Newcastle I have seen a few, but I do know the type of place I like to drink in. I might venture back at xmas to see what the eagle is like when the new manager has settled in but until then I will have my recommended 2 or 3 pints 2 or 3 times a week elsewhere.

Too bad you had to decide to go. As others say, you will be missed. My best wishes go to you for your future. As for the Eagle, we will have to wait and see, but your time there has seen it develop from a misunderstood fringe to a well used and popular venue for the un-twinks and the livelier crowd alike.
We, the punters, will continue to sup it and see and let's hope that whoever steps into your shoes does so with respect for what you have built up rather than with self aggrandisement and empire building as their primary concern.
Good luck Rick, thanks for it all, and long live the Eagle!

As someone else has said, the atmosphere was very much different, maybe even wrong, in the Eagle on saturday. It being my last night working there, I wasn't expecting it to be the best time obviously, but it was horrible. Really made me sad, as a staff member and customer that was once such a friendly atmosphere has decended into something distinctly uncomfortable, more so now the various staff members have left than ever before. I know I made the right decision leaving after my experience that night, although I will miss working with Rick and the others.
It was a short one for me, but it is indeed the end of a era and I'm sad to say goodbye to the good times Ive had.

Well Gavatron
you will be missed you may have only been there a short while but I will miss you and am sure the customers will too, just like they will miss Mark and Rick for the atmosphere they all created in the upstairs bar
I shall try to carry on as best as I can accommodating the needs of the customers down stairs but will sure find it hard providing a warm friendly atmosphere where folk can chat cruise and use the toilet facilities in comfort.
I have built up a busy bar and have a large crowd visiting me now and would hate this all to go tits up just because of politics or New Company Policy's but maybe I should say no more.
Anyway gud luck Gavin, Mark and Rick

Cheers for the support guys. It's nice to know that the work I put in didn't go unnoticed. I look forward to seeing you all out and about but on the same side of the bar this time! A lot of people have been asking how I'm feeling now and I was giving it some thought over the weekend. I can only describe it like - you know how you feel when a close relative is very ill in hospital and after what seems like forever they eventually pass away - almost like that. Sad that it's over but relieved at the same time. Does that make any sense?

Rick, even I know you were the best thing to happen to that bar in a long long time, and you leaving is one of the worst things. You made it your baby and its more than understandable to feel as bad as you do. But here's to the future eh? As Ive said before, good luck in whatever you do, and I hope to see you all soon
